Guided Assignment 1

Following are terms that may help you in searching for information on issues regarding autism:
AUTISM “AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISORDER”
AUTISTIC “PERVASIVE DEVELOPMENTAL DISORDERS”
CHILDREN “CHILD DEVELOPMENT”
INFANTS YOUNG ADULTS

These terms can be used in a keyword search or in a topic/subject search.

Using the guided/advanced search option, these terms can be modified in a number of ways, depending on the information required.

In order to complete the guided searches listed below:
  1. Go to the Virtual Library home page library.ccc.cccd.edu.
  2. Click on “Research and Information Resources”.
  3. Click on “Online Databases” on the horizontal menu bar at the top of the page.
  4. If you have not yet registered, select “new user, supply the necessary information, and be sure to print the “Registration Complete” sheets for future reference.
  5. Scroll down the list of databases, and select the one in which you wish to search.
  6. Enter the user name and password on your “Registration Complete” sheets, and you are on your way!

  1. PROQUEST GUIDED SEARCH

    1. The initial search page defaults to a simple keyword search. For this assignment, type the following exactly as it appears here: autism AND “child development”.

    5. At this point, there are several things you can do with the article:
      1. Read it in place, and use cut-and-paste tools to place parts of the article into your word processing document.

      4. Save it to a floppy, zip disk, or hard drive.
      5. Mark it so that it is saved in a folder within the database. This option in particularly useful when you do not have time to read each article to determine its relevance to your research.

    6. To complete this assignment:
      1. Read the article.
      2. Briefly answer (one paragraph) the following question: What is the significance of the finding in this research regarding a discrepancy between the development of language skills and the development of visual motor problem solving skills in children under 36 months of age.
      3. Submit your answer to your instructor. Be sure your name is on the paper.


  2. ACADEMIC SEARCH ELITE GUIDED SEARCH

    1. The initial search page defaults to a simple keyword search. For this assignment, type the following exactly as it appears here: autism children

    5. Click the “New Search” button on the horizontal blue bar at the top of the page, then click on “Guided Search” on the horizontal green bar just below.

    6. The “Guided Search” screen looks like the image below. Use this image to assist you in creating your query (that is, the combination of words and search fields that the search engine will use to sort through its database and return records that fulfill the criteria).
      1. In the first box, type autism; leave the field selection at “All Fields”.
      2. In the second box, type development; click on the little arrow key next to the field selection box; then click on the “SU Subject” option.
      3. In the third box, type boys; click on the little arrow key next to the field selection box; then click on the “TI Article_Title” option.
