1. About electronic books (e-books).
   
   
   1. Electronic books (e-books) are digitized versions of published materials. Electronic books may be delivered in a number of different ways, but the method that makes e-books most useful is via the Internet.
      
      
   2. Reading an entire book online is still a pretty difficult task, and printing the complete text of the book without the express, written permission of the copyright holder is illegal. So what is the good of e-books then: convenient, timely access to comprehensive, authoritative, and pertinent information.
      
      
   3. Coastline Virtual Library provides access to nearly 10,000 e-book titles. Since the collection is shared with other community colleges in California, these e-books may not be checked out, but may be read and used online.
      
      
   4. Coastline students and faculty may create personal accounts through the Coastline account. The personal account permits the user to
      1. Bookmark a specific section
      2. Post notes to "pages"
      3. Create a reading shelf of "favorite" books

   
   

2. To get to the e-book collection: From the library home page, go to the Research and Information Resources page, and then click on NetLibrary eBooks.

3. You may search immediately, by clicking on the "Basic or Advanced Search" tab.
   
   
4. Search by keyword in the title, author, subject, keyword, or full-text fields. Remember that a librarian assigns subject headings and you may need to refer to the Library of Congress Classification Outline (http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/lcco/lcco.html) to help you find appropriate subject terms.
   
   
5. The "Help" pages are very helpful and contain lots of information about searching and using the ebook collection.
